In honor of John McIntosh, his family has established an endowment to support a bursary for students in the Geology and Geophysics programs of the Department of Earth, Energy, and Environment at the University of Calgary. Preference will be given to continuing undergraduates with financial need and involvement in a summer Field School Course.
John was born in Ottawa, Ontario (1932) and completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in engineering and geology at Carlton, McGill and Queen’s Universities. He worked across Canada in the uranium (Cardiff), iron ore (Labrador City and Atikokan), coal (Fernie), and petroleum (Calgary and Fort McMurray) mining industries. In recognition of his untiring devotion towards his community, John received a 1992 “unsung hero” award from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. After a successful professional career spanning 35 years, John retired to Calgary where he continued to enjoy outdoor sports including skiing, golf and curling.
John believed that the evolution of mining in Canada is strongly dependent upon excellent university training for our next generation of scientists and engineers. Indeed, he moved to Calgary to enable his three sons and a daughter study at the University of Calgary.
In conclusion, as we commemorate John McIntosh's remarkable life, let us ensure that his passion for geoscience and dedication to hands-on learning continue to inspire future generations. Your donations to the John McIntosh Memorial Award will not only honor his memory but also provide invaluable support to students pursuing their dreams at the University of Calgary. Together, we can perpetuate John's legacy and empower budding geoscientists to explore the wonders of the natural world with the same enthusiasm and curiosity that he exemplified.
