The Annual Gandhi Lecture

The Annual Gandhi Lecture was established through a partnership between the Faculty of Arts and the Gandhi Society of Calgary.  Through the creation of an endowment, we have been able to establish an annual lecture series where distinguished speakers will come to the University of Calgary to present and promote awareness of current issues that relate to different aspects of building a peaceful and harmonious world.  This would include among others, peace, human rights, equality, corporate social responsibility, poverty alleviation, and environmental sustainability.

Key Attributes of the Lecture:

  • The Annual Gandhi Lecture allows the University of Calgary and the Faculty of Arts to provide students, faculty, staff and community the opportunity to hear and engage with distinguished speakers on the many diverse and important ideas, perspectives, teachings and learnings related to Mahatma Gandhi's quest in building a peaceful and harmonious world.
  • As we continue to face worldly challenges such as conflict, terrorism, human migration, and human rights, the Annual Gandhi Lecture will help expose and teach our students and future leaders how discussions of peace, harmony, justice, human rights, and economics can allow us to reflect on how we, as individuals, can contribute and impact our own society – in Calgary and beyond.
  • In partnering with the Gandhi Society of Calgary to form this annual lecture, it will be a first for the University of Calgary and it will be the only organization in Calgary that promotes the issues that concerned Mahatma Gandhi, thus being able to influence leaders provincially, nationally and globally while enhancing the overall reputation of the University and city of Calgary.
