Dr. Francis Hartman joined The University of Calgary in 1991 as the Director of the Project Management Specialization, and continued to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level in Project Management until 2010. His NSERC/SSHRC Chair in Project Management established in 1994, led to the development of a research program based on project management priorities established by an industry advisory group. Francis’ research led to significant savings on many projects worth millions of dollars annually. He was the principal researcher behind the development and testing of SMART™ Management, which is used to enhance the effective management of a growing number of projects, programs and businesses.

Dr. Hartman was a renowned keynote speaker at the international level, and authored numerous publications, including two books, “Don’t Park Your Brain Outside” on SMART™ Project Management, published by PMI in 1999, and “Ten Commandments of Better Contracting”, published by ASCE, 2003.

Dr. Hartman's students would tell you that his positive energy level, passion for learning and sharing was very inspirational. Furthermore, his critical thinking ability combined with his delightful sense of humor and patience placed him in high esteem both as a mentor and a respected professional who continually gave above and beyond the norm.  Dr. Hartman will be forever missed but never forgotten.
