Donate to the Dr. David Stather Memorial Award

Our friend and colleague, Dr. David Stather, died in a sky-diving accident in Arizona on January 24, 2014.

Dr. Stather was a specialist respirologist with advanced training in Interventional Pulmonary Medicine (IPM) in the Section of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Calgary. His clinical practice was based out of the Foothills Hospital, where he interacted broadly with colleagues in a number of Departments within the Faculty of Medicine, including Surgery, Diagnostic Imaging, Oncology, Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pathology. In his professional work, Dr. Stather was widely recognized as a colleague who practiced medicine to the highest clinical and academic standards. He cared deeply about the wellbeing of his patients, many of whom had advanced respiratory diseases; David made a difference in their lives with his commitment, expertise and compassion.

Dr. Stather’s areas of academic expertise included simulation teaching of thoracic procedures; he had published a number of scientific papers in this area, and was widely regarded as an international opinion leader in the field. He was an active member of the national Canadian Thoracic Society clinical assembly on chest procedures, where he generously shared his expertise in interventional pulmonary medicine. Respirology in Canada is going to be profoundly impacted by David’s untimely death.

Dr. Stather is being remembered by his colleagues across Canada as a kind, generous man who was a caring and skilled physician. Dave was passionate about so many things in life, including his work and teaching in respiratory medicine and thoracic oncology, the Canadian outdoors and skydiving. He died doing something he loved.

In recognition of Dr. Stather’s many outstanding contributions to the clinical care of respiratory patients across Western Canada, and to the academic mandate of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary, we are establishing the Dr. David Stather Memorial Award, which will be used to support IPM Fellowship Training in Calgary. David trained several of the outstanding IPM physicians now practicing throughout Canada, and we are certain that he would have endorsed the use of this Award for these purposes.
