CIH Endowment

The Calgary Institute for the Humanities (CIH) recently received a generous $1 million gift from double alumna Judy MacLachlan, who was inspired by her belief in the Institute's valuable work and positive strategic directions. This inspiring donation has motivated CIH to set a goal to build a $5 million endowment to support research, student experiences and to grow our community.

Creating this new CIH Endowment moves the institute closer to:
• supporting and promoting groundbreaking humanities research by enhancing the CIH Resident
• facilitating cutting-edge interdisciplinary research through our working groups
• attracting and mentoring the next generation of researchers through a Postdoctoral fellowship
• sharing research with our community through our Publications Program
• bringing community together through public lectures on timely and relevant topics

In today's world studying the humanities is important to everyone. Researching and studying our past guides our future and allows collaborative discussion for researchers to work across the university and enhance approaches to studying what it means to be human. CIH has worked to foster humanities research of the highest order, to encourage interdisciplinary conversations between scholars, and to communicate the results of Humanities research to the greater community.

The humanities explore what it means to be human, looking at literature, philosophy, religion and art to explore questions of timeliness and enduring relevance. The humanities bring new questions to older texts, and use explorations of the past to navigate the new worlds in which we find ourselves. The CIH has worked to foster humanities research of the highest order, to encourage interdisciplinary conversations between scholars, and to communicate the results of Humanities research to the greater community.
