Nigel M. Waters Graduate Scholarship in Geographic Information Systems
"Dr. Nigel M Waters inspires his grad students to scholarly excellence, to remain fair, patient, encouraging, and above all, that each should foster kindness in the academic setting." - Dr. S. Alexander, Dept of Geography, U of C
In 1975, a young, dynamic professor by the name of Nigel Michael Waters came to the University of Calgary via the University of Western Ontario (Western). Although not quite finished his PhD (1977), he developed instant rapport with students and colleagues alike. His distinguished career has many achievements and Nigel enjoys wide recognition in the Canadian and International Geographic communities. When all is considered, Nigel has taught thousands of students during his tenure and, additionally, has supervised hundreds more in undergraduate and Master's thesis work, Master's of GIS projects, and PhD dissertations. His career as Professor Emeritus, Adjunct Professor in Engineering, researcher and mentor continues to this day.
In honour of his 70th birthday (April 6th), we are delighted to announce the creation of the Nigel M. Waters Graduate Scholarship in Geography at the University of Calgary. Please help us reach our goal of $25,000 to endow this award and consider making a gift in honour of Dr. Water’s continuous efforts, on behalf of students. Donations made between April 1 and April 23, 2020 are eligible to be matched to a maximum of $2,500 per donation as long as matching funds are available.
If the received total amount from all donors is not sufficient to build a new endowment or create a new spend-down award by April 30, 2021, the University may redesignate the gift and shall adhere as closely as is reasonably possible to the Donor’s intent. If such closeness of purpose is not found, the donation will be redirected to an existing scholarship (undergraduate or graduate), preferably in Geography. The University shall not be required to return any portion of the Gift already paid.
