In memory of Victor Jammona Ramraj, Ph.D thank you for your donation.  Your gift will support the Victor J. Ramraj Memorial Scholarship.

Victor was born near the banks of the Essequibo River in Guyana, and spent his childhood on Wakenaam Island, and the lush greenery and shores along the Essequibo. After completing his secondary education at St. Stanislaus College in Georgetown, Guyana, he proceeded to the University College of the West Indies (London) — now UWI, Mona Campus — in Kingston, Jamaica, where he captured his BA in English Literature at the University of New Brunswick, and then became a  Professor of English at the University of Calgary. Dean Richard Sigurdson, described Victor’s work and legacy:

A distinguished expert in postcolonial studies and Canadian literature, Victor was the author of several books, including a ground-breaking study of Mordecai Richler, dozens of articles and reviews, and works of creative writing. He was internationally recognized, having given numerous lectures and plenary addresses at various institutions worldwide, including a State Lecture on Postcolonialism and Postmodernism, in Georgetown, sponsored by the Prime Minister of Guyana. Victor was very active in the international literary community. For instance, he was a judge of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize 1999-2000 and of the Guyana Prize for Literature (2005 and 2011). Victor made a significant difference in his field, and his contribution will stand as a testament to his devotion to literary studies.
