Social Work Indigenous Scholars Academy Endowed Scholarship

The University of Calgary's journey toward reconciliation has just begun. Building on a foundation of compassion, openness and trust, the University is committed to renewing relationships with Indigenous peoples, and to creating an inclusive, mindful, cross-cultural teaching and learning environment that promotes awareness, education and understanding. We recognize the devastating effect of residential schools on generations of Indigenous peoples in Canada, and the part that education played in language and cultural loss, socio-cultural disparity, and intergenerational trauma.

The Social Work Indigenous Scholars Academy, ISA, is a transition program for Indigenous students aging out of foster care. The ISA program provides educational opportunities and the culturally based supports that students need to flourish in post-secondary education. The program is designed to encourage and educate Indigenous Social Work students, as well as their support networks, to enhance their professional skill sets. The program also helps students create a new narrative for themselves by integrating experiences from their past to build opportunities for their future, with a goal to develop a network of scholars with shared experience to create a safe, supportive community.

It is the University of Calgary's intent to preserve Indigenous culture by building the Social Work Indigenous Scholars Academy's curricula via integration of Indigenous perspectives, histories, and language. In consultation with traditional knowledge keepers, and in keeping with the university's institutional Indigenous strategy, we will create, implement and evaluate practices for the increased recruitment, admission, enrolment, retention, and success of Indigenous students.

Please join us by donating to the Indigenous Scholars Academy Endowed Scholarship, the first innovative program of it’s kind in Canada.
