Bob wanted the best for Albertans and for Albertans to be the best. His motto was always "We can do that here, only bigger and better".
About the Hotchkiss Brain Institute’s Stroke program
Bob was a founder of the medical school at the Foothills Hospital and his life ended there. Donations made in memory of Dr. Robert Church will support the Hotchkiss Brain Institute’s Stroke program.
In 2015, Bob received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from the University of Alberta. In his convocation speech he noted:
"I am particularly pleased to be here today as a little over two months ago, I suffered a major stroke deep in the speech center of my brain. I was fortunate to have the team of Drs. Hill, Demchuk and Goyal of the Foothills Hospital stroke unit use world-leading technology that they pioneered, to remove the clot." - Bob
About the Robert B Church Legacy of Leadership Fund
This fund was created to honour Dr. Bob Church's legacy at the University of Calgary. It was established by Dr. Church with the intention of cultivating a future generation of leaders from the Cumming School of Medicine who can meet the challenges of an increasingly multi-disciplinary world. The programs that this funding will support should give students enriched academic and leadership experiences and expanded world-views that will enable them to bring their best ideas to fruition in Alberta and around the world.
In his work at the University of Calgary and beyond, Dr. Church displayed a remarkable ability to connect people and ideas. Multi-disciplinary education, international training experiences, and an emphasis on collaboration shaped Dr. Church's views as a young learner. This is the legacy he wants to leave for the next generation of leaders who are shaping their own futures while studying at the University of Calgary.
Thank you for your thoughtful contribution.
